Daniel spent the whole year anticipating his third birthday. During that year he had seen all the children in the nursery celebrating. It all seemed so magical; the parents coming, the cake, the flowers, being lifted up high in the air on the special chair all covered with hearts and flowers. Blowing out the candles. It seemed to him that the birthday child was bestowed with super powers that transformed him into the most glamorous creature. Daniel wanted so much to have his own birthday. Whenever asked for his age he would eagerly reply: “soon I’m going to be three years old. I’m going to have a birthday party. I will get a scooter”.
“Wake up Daniel, today is your birthday”, Daniel heard his mother’s voice calling from afar.
This was his birthday, apparently. All he could feel was irritation about having to leave his cozy bed. He felt tired and cranky. “Wake up. We have to go to the nursery. Today we are celebrating”, his mother said impatiently and added: “This is the day you’ve been waiting for! It had finally come!” “I don’t want to go to the nursery and I don’t want a birthday party”, Daniel whined. “I just want to stay in bed”.
He went to the nursery with his parents. It was decorated with balloons and colorful ornaments. His grandparents came. He sat on the special chair all covered with hearts and flowers. His mother tried putting a crown of flowers over his head but he took it off. Everyone were sitting at a circle staring at him. He didn’t feel any superpowers. He just felt hot. “Is it now?” He asked his mother. “Now is the birthday?”
